Sesame; benne; benni; benny; Sesamum indicum is an East Indian annual erect herb, and also used as source of sesame seed or benniseed and sesame oil. Sesame are either of two annual herbaceous plants of the genus Sesamum (S. Indicum, and S. orientale), from the seeds of which an oil is expressed; also, the small obovate, flattish seeds of these plants, sometimes used as food.
Sesame oil is mainly obtained from sesame seeds. This is a small oval seeds of the sesame plant.
Worldwide production of sesame seeds is estimated at 8 million tons. This is steadily growing. China, Japan and Turkey are the large importers. The crop in most African countries has been increasing over the last few years.
Our main sourcing countries are Togo, Nigeria and Burkina Faso. We collect the seeds from the farmers through our network of buying agents. In some cases we supply the seeds to the farmers and buy back the harvest at a pre-agreed price. By operating this way, we guaranty the supply throughout the year.
