How You Can Propagate Some Species Of Cassava Using It Seeds - Do Cassava Really Carry/Produce Seeds?

How many of us have noticed that some species of cassava can be propagated by using it seeds? Some may not even know that some cassava produce seeds.

This is contrary to the popular belief that the only propagating material for cassava is "stem cutting".

We have endeavor to carry out the experiment this season and report the outcome on this with evidence. We carried out this experiment years back on Manihot Esculentus and M Palmata. That of Manihot palmata did not yield any result.

In Manihot esculentus, few seeds  germinated. We repeated the experiment and we obtained the same result. We reported the case study to the farm manager and other observers.

Jointly, we repeated the experiment. Out of the 50 viable cassava seeds planted, about 43 germinated. It was then we realized that a single cassava seeds can produce more than two seedlings. 

* Do cassava really carry seeds?

Yes some species do. When I was a bit younger and attending elementary school, my friends and I do play a route of cassava farm and would harvest the dried seeds from these cassava plants and snack on them while going back home.

But the question some people are kind of need an answer to is that - can cassava be planted from seeds? They might have actually seen it before but was like planting it from such seeds isn't possible

But, this could be tried yourself. it's a matter of getting some seeds and plant them. Might give it a shot and see the outcome. Not only cassava, I know red yam (Dioscorea spp) can be planted with seeds, though I have not tried it.

That may true for yam but not all species by the way. The f1 will yield inedible wild yam, but after replanting the f1, the f2 will now yield seed yams. It's only a technique for seed yam production. It's still being experimented.

The true remains that yam seeds are not real seeds. Yam seeds are the small whole yam. Very small. It still grow as tuber. Not a product of flower. I mean product of flower, not seed yam for planting.

It is true but it is unique to a set of species. In Benue state, there are some specific species refered to as Barnada, they produce lots of seeds. There's one called vitamin c, it's tubers are yellowish and has seed too. One thing is, we are yet to try planting them. But with this, maybe we'll experiment and see. So, the yellow root produces seeds. 

* When can one collect the seed for planting?

Not sure, but at the point of harvest, the seed can be detached. We eat the cassava seeds as children running around inside the bush and people's farm.
